Born in Kansas, completed a degree in Music at the University of Kansas and studied further at the Chautauqua
School of Music, New York. Formerly a principal artist with both the Staatstheater Kassel, Germany, and the
English National Opera, London, he has also appeared as Guest at the Theater Kiel, the Theater Krefeld and the
Volkstheater Rostock. His many roles have included The Witch Hänsel und Gretel, Monostatos Die Zauberflöte,
Truffaldino The Love for Three Oranges, Platon Karataev War and Peace, Rinuccio Gianni Schicchi, Edmondo in
Manon Lescaut, Pang Turandot, Alfred Die Fledermaus, Young Guard King Priam, David Die Meistersinger von
Nürnberg and Walther von der Vogelweide Tannhäuser.
Other engagements have included The Prince Rusalka, Steva Jenufa and Boris Katya Kabanova for English
Touring Opera, Goro Madama Butterfly with Dayton Opera, Matteo Arabella for Opera Australia and
The Steersman Der fliegende Holländer for London Lyric Opera at the Barbican Hall and Grange Park Opera.
Richard Roberts’ recordings include Bardolph Falstaff with English National Opera conducted by Paul Daniel
(Chandos CD) and The Cockerel The Cunning Little Vixen with the Berlin Deutsches Symphony Orchestra
conducted by Kent Nagano (Opus Arte DVD). Concert engagements include Fourth Jew Salome with the LSO
conducted by Richard Hickox, Beethoven Choral Symphony at the Brighton Dome, Mozart Requiem at the
Royal Festival Hall, Carmina Burana at the Barbican Hall and Rossini Stabat Mater at St John’s, Smith Square.
He has also appeared in Opera Galas for Raymond Gubbay Ltd at major venues in Cardiff, Edinburgh, Liverpool
and Manchester as well as at the National Concert Hall, Dublin.
Recent engagements have included Rustighello Lucrezia Borgia for English National Opera, Mime Das Rheingold
for Opera North and Young Seaman / Sailor Tristan und Isolde for Grange Park Opera.
Current engagements include The Mayor Albert Herring for English Touring Opera, Kaufmann Jakob Lenz for
English National Opera, Stroh Intermezzo for Buxton Festival Opera, Mime Das Rheingold for Longborough
